Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico | The Great Wine of Veneto

Amarone is the result of Allegrini's centuries of skill in the Valpolicella Classico hills — a modern wine with a profound connection to tradition. Sourced from the family's south-east facing hillside vineyards at 180–280 metres above sea level, the grapes (Corvina, Corvinone, Oseleta and Rondinella) are dried for several months on bamboo racks in well-ventilated lofts after harvest — a process called appassimento. This concentrates the sugars, flavours and structure to produce a wine of extraordinary power, depth and longevity. A classic of the appellation with imposing structure, refined tannins and a long, spiced finish. Vegetarian and vegan friendly.

Tom's Note: What is not to like? The higher alcohol content is disguised by utterly wonderful flavours and aromas consistent with the Amarone style. We always have a case on hand at home.

Tasting Notes

A classic of the appellation. Intense aromas of ripe dark fruit — dried cherry, fig, plum — alongside sweet spice, chocolate and a hint of tobacco. The palate has imposing structure and depth, superb balance with refined tannins, full body and a long, complex, spiced finish. Both traditional and unmistakably Allegrini.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Amarone?

Amarone della Valpolicella is one of Italy's greatest red wines, made from dried grapes in the Valpolicella Classico zone of Veneto. After harvest, the grapes are laid out on bamboo racks in well-ventilated lofts for 3–4 months to partially dry — a process called appassimento. This concentrates the sugars, flavours and structure dramatically, producing a wine of exceptional richness, power and complexity. The name 'Amarone' means 'great bitter one' — a reference to the dry finish that distinguishes it from the sweeter Recioto della Valpolicella made from the same process.

Why is the ABV so high at 16%?

The appassimento process concentrates the natural sugars in the grapes significantly. When these concentrated grapes ferment, the high sugar levels produce a wine with naturally high alcohol — typically 15–17% for Amarone. Allegrini manage this beautifully: the 16% ABV is genuinely disguised by the richness of fruit, the complexity of flavour and the structure of the wine. You don't notice it in the glass.

How long should I age it?

Amarone is one of the longest-lived wines in the world. While it can be drunk on release, it reaches its peak at 15–25 years from the vintage — developing extraordinary secondary complexity of dried fruit, leather, tobacco, sweet spice and dark chocolate. Allegrini's version is approachable earlier than many due to their modern winemaking approach, but patience is always rewarded.

How should I serve it?

Decant for a minimum of 2 hours before serving — ideally open the bottle the day before and decant for the final hour. Serve at 18–20°C in large, generous Burgundy glasses that allow the complex aromatics to open up fully. It's worth the preparation.
