Capezzana, Barco Reale di Carmignano | Tuscan Red Wine
From the historic Tenuta di Capezzana estate — one of Tuscany's oldest and most respected wine producers, with a documented winemaking history stretching back over 1,200 years — the Barco Reale di Carmignano is the estate's younger, more approachable red. Made predominantly from Sangiovese with a Cabernet component, it captures the character of the Carmignano appellation in a wine built for drinking now rather than cellaring for decades.
Tom's Note: Carmignano was blending Cabernet with Sangiovese centuries before anyone called it a Super Tuscan. This is proper Tuscan red with real pedigree — and it drinks beautifully with a dry-aged steak.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby in the glass. The nose offers red cherry, ripe plum and violet with a gentle savoury edge and a touch of sweet spice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity and a clean, moreish finish. Approachable young but with enough structure to stand up to serious food.
Technical Details
Grape: Sangiovese with Cabernet | Region: Barco Reale di Carmignano DOC, Tuscany | Size: 75cl | Producer: Tenuta di Capezzana
Food Pairing
A natural partner for red meat. Outstanding with our Dry-Aged Ribeye or Rib of Beef — the fresh acidity cuts through the richness of dry-aged beef beautifully. Also excellent with our Artisanal Cheeses, particularly aged hard cheeses.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Barco Reale di Carmignano?
Barco Reale di Carmignano is a DOC red wine from the Carmignano appellation, just west of Florence in Tuscany. It is the younger, more approachable sibling of Carmignano DOCG — made from the same Sangiovese and Cabernet blend but released earlier and built for drinking young. The name refers to the "Barco Reale", the royal hunting park established by the Medici family in the seventeenth century.
What makes Carmignano different from Chianti?
Both are Sangiovese-based Tuscan reds, but Carmignano has permitted — and indeed required — a Cabernet component since the eighteenth century, long before the Super Tuscan movement made the practice fashionable. That Cabernet element gives Carmignano wines a slightly rounder, more structured character than a typical Chianti while retaining classic Tuscan freshness.
What does it pair with?
This is a red built for meat. Dry-aged beef, grilled lamb, roast pork and rich ragu all work beautifully. The fresh acidity and fine tannins cut through fat without overwhelming the meat, making it an excellent match for a dry-aged ribeye or a rib of beef. Also very good with aged hard cheeses.
How should I serve it?
Serve at 16–18°C. A short decant of 30 minutes will open it up nicely, though it is approachable straight from the bottle. Best enjoyed within a few years of the vintage.
