Chapel Down Tenterden Estate Bacchus | English White Wine, Kent
Produced at Chapel Down's home estate in Tenterden, Kent, the Tenterden Estate Bacchus is a single-estate English white wine that showcases the remarkable versatility of the Bacchus grape. Whole-bunch pressed and fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to preserve its natural aromatics, this is an ideal alternative to New World Sauvignon Blanc — with lime zest and elderflower on the nose and a rich, mineral palate that speaks clearly of its Kent chalk and clay terroir.
Tom's Note: A truly superb UK white wine and great value. There isn't anything not to like about this bottle.
Tasting Notes
Aromatic and fresh on the nose with lime zest, elderflower and a hint of cut grass. The palate is juicy and citrus-driven with good mineral structure and a clean, pure finish. The six months on lees in tank adds a subtle creaminess and roundness that lifts the wine beyond a simple aromatic style.

Food Pairing
Outstanding with fish, shellfish and light chicken dishes. Also a natural match for our Artisanal Cheeses — particularly Spenwood and Lincolnshire Poacher on a summer board.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Bacchus?
Bacchus is a German-bred white grape variety that has become the signature grape of English wine. It produces wines with vibrant aromatics — elderflower, lime, nettle, gooseberry — that are often compared to Sauvignon Blanc. England's cool climate and chalk soils are ideally suited to Bacchus, producing wines of real character and freshness that are genuinely world-class.
How does Tenterden Estate differ from Kit's Coty Bacchus?
Both are Chapel Down Bacchus wines but from different vineyards and with different winemaking approaches. The Tenterden Estate is the more accessible, fresh and aromatic expression — fermented in stainless steel to preserve fruit character. The Kit's Coty Bacchus is the premium single-vineyard version — oak-fermented, richer and more complex. Both are outstanding; Tenterden is the everyday choice, Kit's Coty for a special occasion.
Is it a good alternative to Sauvignon Blanc?
Excellent — the aromatic profile (lime, elderflower, fresh herbs) is similar but with an English character that's lighter, more delicate and more mineral. If you enjoy New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc but want something English with genuine quality credentials, Tenterden Estate Bacchus is one of the most compelling alternatives available.
How should I serve it?
Serve well chilled at 8–10°C. Best drunk within 2–3 years of the vintage to preserve its fresh, aromatic character. No decanting needed.
