Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva | Rioja DOCa, Spain
From El Coto de Rioja — one of the most respected names in the region — the Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva represents the top of the Rioja ageing hierarchy. Made exclusively from Tempranillo grown in the estate's finest vineyards, and only produced in outstanding vintages, this is a wine given the time it deserves: extended ageing in American oak followed by years of bottle maturation before release. The result is a Rioja of real depth, complexity and elegance.
Tom's Note: A proper Gran Reserva at a price that makes no sense. Open it an hour before dinner and serve it with something dry-aged.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby with a garnet rim showing its age. The nose is layered and inviting — ripe red and black fruit, sweet vanilla and coconut from the American oak, tobacco leaf, leather and a savoury, earthy depth. The palate is silky and long, with fully resolved tannins, balanced acidity and a finish that goes on. Everything is in its place.

Food Pairing
Built for dry-aged beef. Superb with our Dry-Aged Ribeye or a Rib of Beef — the vanilla and savoury notes of a Gran Reserva sit beautifully against the nutty intensity of properly aged beef. Also excellent with slow-cooked lamb and aged Manchego from our Artisanal Cheese range.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Gran Reserva mean?
Gran Reserva is the highest ageing classification in Rioja. To carry the designation, a red wine must be aged for a minimum of five years before release — at least two of those in oak barrels and a further three in bottle. Gran Reserva is only produced in vintages the winery considers exceptional, which is why it isn't made every year. It's a genuine mark of quality, not just a label.
What is the difference between Reserva and Gran Reserva?
Both are aged classifications, but Gran Reserva demands significantly more time. A Reserva requires a minimum of three years' ageing with at least one year in oak. A Gran Reserva requires a minimum of five years with at least two in oak. Gran Reserva is also only declared in the best vintages. The result is a softer, more complex, more evolved wine — where a Reserva still shows fresher fruit and more immediate structure.
What does it pair with?
Red meat, and dry-aged beef in particular. The American oak ageing gives Rioja its characteristic vanilla and coconut notes, which work beautifully with the nutty, savoury character of dry-aged steak. Also excellent with roast lamb, slow-cooked pork, chorizo and aged hard cheeses like Manchego.
How should I serve it?
Serve at 16–18°C. A Gran Reserva of this age benefits from decanting — an hour before serving will let it open fully. It's drinking beautifully now but has the structure to hold for several more years if you'd rather keep it.
