Coto de Imaz Reserva | Rioja DOCa, Spain

From El Coto de Rioja — one of the region's most respected producers — the Coto de Imaz Reserva is classic Rioja done properly. Made from 100% Tempranillo grown in the estate's own vineyards, it spends a minimum of three years maturing before release, with substantial time in American oak. The result is a wine with the vanilla-and-spice signature Rioja is loved for, but with fresher fruit and more immediate appeal than its Gran Reserva sibling.

Tom's Note: The everyday Rioja that isn't an everyday price. Brilliant with a mid-week steak.

Tasting Notes

Deep cherry red. Ripe red fruit on the nose — raspberry and plum — lifted by sweet vanilla, baking spice and a hint of coconut from the American oak. The palate is smooth and well balanced with soft tannins, fresh acidity and a clean, gently spiced finish. Approachable straight from the bottle and very easy to enjoy.

Food Pairing

A natural with red meat. Excellent alongside our Dry-Aged Sirloin or Rump Steak — the fresh fruit and soft tannins make it a more versatile everyday partner than a Gran Reserva. Also very good with chorizo, roast lamb and our Artisanal Cheeses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Reserva mean?

Reserva is an ageing classification in Rioja. To carry the designation, a red wine must be aged for a minimum of three years before release, with at least one of those years spent in oak barrels. It sits above Crianza and below Gran Reserva in the hierarchy — a genuine mark of quality and time, not just marketing.

What is the difference between Reserva and Gran Reserva?

Time. A Reserva requires a minimum of three years' ageing with at least one year in oak. A Gran Reserva requires five years with at least two in oak, and is only declared in exceptional vintages. The Reserva shows fresher fruit and more immediate structure; the Gran Reserva is softer, more complex and more evolved. Both are excellent — the Reserva is the more versatile everyday choice.

What does it pair with?

Red meat above all. The vanilla and spice from American oak ageing work beautifully with grilled or pan-seared steak — sirloin and rump in particular. Also excellent with chorizo, roast lamb, tomato-based dishes and semi-cured cheeses like a young Manchego.

How should I serve it?

Serve at 16–18°C. Approachable straight from the bottle, though 30 minutes open will let it settle and show more. Drinking well now and for the next few years.
