Offley Colheita Port 2018 | Single-Harvest Tawny Port, Douro

A Colheita Port is a tawny Port from a single harvest year — quite different from vintage Port, which is bottled young and aged in bottle. Offley's 2018 Colheita has been aged in small oak casks in the Douro, developing the characteristic tawny colour and complex dried fruit and nut flavours that distinguish great Colheita from any other style of Port. Made from Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barroca grown on hand-harvested steep terraces above the Douro river. Best served slightly chilled.

Tom's Note: The very best Port I have ever tasted — superbly smooth with real flavour. An epic bottle.

Tasting Notes

Brick-red in colour with orange tints. A hugely complex nose with pronounced aromas of raisins, dried apricots, figs, roasted nuts and toffee, married with spicy notes of ginger and nutmeg. On the palate, a vibrant acidity perfectly balances the sweetness and carries the intense flavours to an elegant, harmonious and long finish.

Food Pairing

Outstanding with our Artisanal Cheeses — particularly Colston Bassett Stilton, which is one of the great classic Port and cheese pairings. Also superb with Maters & Co Raw Honey and walnuts as a post-dinner dessert board.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Colheita Port?

Colheita (pronounced col-YAY-ta) is a tawny Port from a single harvest year that has been aged for a minimum of seven years in small oak casks before bottling. Unlike vintage Port (which is bottled after 2 years and aged further in bottle), Colheita's oxidative cask ageing develops its characteristic tawny colour and complex dried fruit, nut and toffee flavours. The 2018 harvest produced exceptional quality fruit in the Douro, making this an outstanding Colheita.

How is it different from Vintage Port?

Vintage Port is bottled young (after 2 years in cask) and aged for decades in bottle — producing a deep ruby wine with primary fruit and fine, grippy tannins. Colheita is aged primarily in small oak casks for many years, developing its tawny colour through gradual oxidation and concentrating into complex flavours of dried fruit, nuts and caramel. Vintage Port is the more powerful, tannic style; Colheita is smoother, more immediately approachable and with greater nutty, oxidative complexity.

Should I serve it chilled?

Yes — Colheita is best served slightly chilled at 12–14°C, unlike vintage Port which is served at room temperature. The slight chill enhances its freshness and lifts the complex dried fruit aromatics. Serve in a proper Port glass or a small white wine glass rather than a large red wine glass.

Once opened, how long will it keep?

Colheita Port keeps remarkably well once opened — much better than table wine. Recorked and kept in a cool place or the fridge, it will remain excellent for 4–6 weeks. Some argue it improves slightly in the days after opening as the aromas integrate further.
